TECHNOLOGY ALIGNMENT

Alignment

Technology alignment—sometimes also known as IT business alignment or business and technology alignment—is the reconciliation of a company’s business goals with its existing and potential technology assets and best practices.

Why use technology alignment as a strategic planning tool?  Because the benefits can be significant.  There are many reasons why information technology assets in companies grow in complexity and in the need for additional resources over time.  One notable cause is innovation.  While a company’s best practices may improve over time, the technologies upon which those practices are based may not have evolved.  So, although synergistic to begin with, these technologies age and become costly maintenance sources.

Technology Over Time

With few exceptions, technology ages and becomes a detriment to the companies where it is deployed.  ”Budget busters” include:

  • Maintenance of large scale systems
  • Inappropriate or unnecessary use of legacy systems
  • Poor capacity planning
  • Incorrectly tuned systems
  • Poor choices or disparities in deployed platforms
